Since 1988, the project has been carrying out satellite monitoring of clear-cut deforestation in the Legal Amazon, producing the region's annual deforestation rates. This detection occurs for areas larger than 6.25 hectares. It is through Prodes that the Brazilian government positions itself in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Furthermore, Prodes is part of the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (PPCDAM), coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment and the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic. INPE produces and publishes on the internet the annual rate, images, vector maps and tables of deforestation exclusively by clear cut.
